PROJECT OVERVIEW:
The Wendell Local Food Security Project includes a network of farms and homesteads that are working to build food security by increasing the amount of food they produce and disseminating skills in food production. Interns will get the opportunity to work on a variety of different farming enterprises, with the potential to learn farm skills representing every food group. Participating farms and gardens practice biodynamic farming/gardening, mushroom cultivation, root cellaring/food preservation, animal husbandry, perennial food crops/orchards, greenhouse production, and much more. This is an intensive self-sufficiency internship, great for people looking to develop life skills or for new farmers interested in experimenting with the diversity of food production to inform the design of a farm business.
JOB DUTIES:
- Planting, weeding, and harvesting

QUALIFICATIONS:
- Ability to lift at least 40lbs and work outdoors in all weather
- Interest in learning skills in homesteading, alternative energy, food production, and community organizing
- Passionate about promoting local agriculture
- Sense of humor and sense of adventure

INTERNSHIP OPPORTUNITY IN LOCAL FOOD SYSTEMS DEVELOPMENT

PROJECT OVERVIEW:
The Wendell Local Food Security Project is an initiative launched by the Town of Wendell, MA to increase the community’s food security by bolstering local production. By providing outreach and education for new gardeners, and promoting economic development around the local foods industry, the Town hopes to increase the number of home gardens and farm businesses. We are seeking an intern to be part of this exciting model that hopes to set a strong precedent in community food systems development for other local governments.
JOB DUTIES:
- Process data from community surveys and focus groups
- Assist in grant-writing and compilation of reports
- Assist in installation and maintenance of low-input edible teaching garden
- Assist in maintenance of community gardens
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Strong writing skills
- Ability to lift at least 40lbs and occasionally work outdoors
- Interest in learning skills in homesteading, alternative energy, food production, and community organizing
- Passionate about promoting local agriculture
- Sense of humor and sense of adventure
