Winter Sowing Native Plants

Make and Take Event with LadyFern Farm

Saturday Feb. 1, 1-3:30 p.m.

Registration Required.

-Short talk on native plants to begin
-Seeds provided (for all sun and soil types)
-Take home a mini-jug greenhouse with 2 native plants seeded ready to be put outside for Spring germination, and full instructions.

You get to pick your choice of native seeds to sow and bring home to prepare for the growing season ahead.  Please sign up!

It is open to attend all five or just drop in for one. Bring things you are working on or come to start writing and feeling comfortable sharing what you have written. It is free and open to anyone 16 and above. This program is free and made possible by a Wendell Cultural Council grant.

AMERICAN FICTION

2023; Cord Jefferson, director; with Jeffrey Wright, Tracee Ellis Ross, John Ortiz

Based on the 2001 novel Erasure by Percival Everett, AMERICAN FICTION is the story of an African-American literary novelist whose novels are critically acclaimed but not selling well. When his latest work is rejected by publishers for not being “Black enough,” the frustrated writer writes an outlandish satire of stereotypical “Black” books, only to find the novel received as serious literature and subsequently published to high sales and critical praise.

CAN YOU EVER FORGIVE ME?

2018; Marielle Heller, director; with Melissa McCarthy, Richard E. Grant, Dolly Wells

Melissa McCarthy stars as Lee Israel, a failing writer who resorts to increasingly desperate measures, namely selling stolen and forged letters from dead authors. Based on the 2008 memoir of the same name by Lee Israel.

FEBRUARY 19

PARALLAX VIEW

1974; Alan J. Pakula, director; with Warren Beatty, Hume Cronyn, William Daniels,  Paula Prentiss

In this political thriller, Warren Beatty is Joe Frady, a newspaper reporter whose investigation into the assassination of a senator leads deeper into the mysterious workings of a dark conspiracy. With its themes of paranoia, corruption, surveillance, assassination, and powerful entities working behind-the-scenes, this is a seminal post-1960s, post-Watergate thriller. The top-notch cinematography by Gordon Willis perfectly reflects Frady’s descent into the unknown.

FEBRUARY 26

SUNSET BOULEVARD

1950; Billy Wilder, director; with William Holden, Gloria Swanson, Erich von Stroheim

Black comedy meets film noir in this classic. William Holden stars as Joe Gillis, a down-on-his-luck screenwriter. Things go extraordinarily wrong when he gets involved with Norma Desmond (Gloria Swanson), a delusional former silent-film star who lives in a fantasy world where she is poised to make a triumphant return to the screen. Nominated for 11 Academy Awards, winner of three.

Tuesday February 18 (cloudy skies postponement date Feb. 25)

6 p.m.

Jim J Zebrowski of the Aldrich Astronomical Society will be back for another presentation and stargazing.  Following a short presentation about what is visible in the night sky (6-6:30p.m.)

According to Jim, this is a great time of the year for star gazing with the Orion Nebula

visible along with the Pleiades star cluster in Taurus – plus we have a host of bright planets visible in the night sky with Venus, Saturn, Jupiter and Mars shining brightly. Jim will bring the Aldrich eight inch dobsonian telescope to view Jupiter and its four Galilean moons along with Saturn which has almost edge on rings!  Venus can be seen right after dark high in the western skies – it is in a gibbous phase. Jim will also

will have his Seestar tracking/imaging telescope to find objects in the night sky that cannot be easily seen without an imaging telescope.

Two years ago we hosted Jim for his fascinating presentation “Exploring Ocean Worlds in Our Solar System and Beyond”.  He has such a depth of knowledge that we are excited to have him back again. We will keep him to a half hour presentation so we have plenty of time for sky viewing.
