Town Coordinator Report 2018

TOWN COORDINATOR

2018 marked my fifteenth year as Town Coordinator for New Salem and Wendell. The concept of a shared coordinator is a rarity, and this position is one of only a handful in Massachusetts. With the emphasis today on regionalizing and sharing services, I think both New Salem and Wendell should be commended for their forward thinking in adopting this model over twenty five years ago. It has provided each town with a level of professionalism at a rate which is affordable to taxpayers.

As in previous years, my primary role is to assist the Selectboard with the wide range of issues that come before them. I serve as the liaison between the Board and other town departments, boards and committees. I also interact with members of the public and consult with Town Counsel when needed. I arrange and post Selectboard meeting agendas, schedule visitors to their meetings, and handle their correspondence. I prepare Town Meeting Warrants and help with budget preparation. In addition, I oversee repairs to town properties, produce the Selecboard Newsletter, and compile information from various boards and departments to create the Annual Report.

I occasionally attend outside training sessions to help improve my ability to serve the town. Most of these meetings are sponsored by either the Small Town Administrators of Massachusetts or our insurance carrier, the Massachusetts Interlocal Insurance Association (MIIA). In 2018, topics at these meetings included use of interns in municipal government, an opioid panel discussion, an injured on-duty workshop, and an all-day training regarding the State’s adoption of OSHA regulations. I also participated in several online webinars sponsored by our insurance company, earning credits to reduce our insurance premiums.

In 2018, I continued in my role as Financial Director. Our Money Management team meets several times a year to review issues related to town finances and the development of long-range financial plans. I also provide assistance to town boards and committees when they have questions related to bill paying or procurement requests.

As always, my thanks to our wonderful Selectboard Clerks: Joy Gorzocoski, who helps keep the office in order, works on special projects, and assists me with the organization of Selectboard appointments; and to Amy Palmer for her clear and concise minutes of Selectboard meetings. Our team works well together, and I appreciate all they do for me and the Selectboard.

I can be reached in the Selectboard Office at 9 Morse Village Road on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 8 am to 4 pm. Feel free to stop by with any questions or concerns related to Wendell. You can call me at 978-544-3395, ext. 100 or email me at .

Respectfully submitted,

Nancy Aldrich
